Moving house or selling a home with solar

What to hand over to the buyer, what to tell your export supplier, and how the new owner takes over the apps and payments.

Solar panels and a battery can be a selling point. A little preparation makes the handover smooth for you and the buyer.

If you're selling

  1. Gather your paperwork. From your handover pack, download the MCS certificate, the Electrical Installation Certificate, the DNO notification or approval (G98 or G99), the Building Regulations Compliance Certificate, and the manuals and warranty documents. Your solicitor will usually ask for these. See Where are my certificates?.
  2. Tell your export supplier. Your Smart Export Guarantee tariff is your contract with your supplier, and it doesn't pass to the buyer. Give a final export meter reading on the day you move out, and end the tariff. See Taking an export meter reading.
  3. Hand over the apps. Remove your account from the monitoring app (FoxCloud, Duracell Energy, Tesla or ShinePhone), so the buyer can set it up in their own name.
  4. Tell us. We'll update our records so the new owner can contact us about the system.

If you've bought a home with our system

  1. Ask the seller for the paperwork above. If you don't have it, contact us with the address and we'll help.
  2. Set up the app in your own name. Contact us if you can't get access.
  3. Apply for export payments. You need the MCS certificate and the DNO paperwork. See The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). The export MPAN belongs to the system, not the person, so it stays with the home.
  4. Tell your home insurer about the solar panels and battery.
  5. Keep the system online. Fox ESS and Tesla Powerwall 3 warranties depend on it. See My Monitoring Is Offline.
