The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)
The SEG is a government-backed initiative that requires UK energy suppliers to pay you for the surplus renewable electricity your solar panels export back to the National Grid.
What You Need Before You Apply
Before starting your application, you must have the following documents and requirements in place:
-
An MCS Certificate: Proves your solar installation meets UK standards. Your installer should provide this to you upon commissioning.
-
A DNO Notification: Confirmation that your Distribution Network Operator (the company managing the power lines in your region) was notified of and approved your system. This is usually a G98 form for standard domestic systems, or a G99 for larger setups.
-
A Smart Meter: You must have a meter capable of taking half-hourly export readings.
-
Proof of Address: A standard utility requirement (such as a council tax or bank statement).
