Will my Duracell battery work in a power cut?

Whether your Duracell Energy battery can keep your lights on during a power cut, and what to check.

A Duracell Energy battery can keep some of your home running during a power cut, but only if your system was installed with backup in mind.

How backup works

According to Duracell, the battery can power a set number of circuits in your home during a power cut. This only works if a separate critical circuit board (sometimes called a backup or essential loads board) was fitted when your system was installed.

Your systemIn a power cut
With a critical circuit boardThe circuits connected to it stay powered. These are usually things like the fridge, some lights and some sockets. Everything else in the house goes off, just as it would without a battery.
Without a critical circuit boardThe battery won't power your home. This is a safety requirement, not a fault.

How much it can power

The amount of power available in a power cut depends on the size of your inverter. Smaller inverters can supply less at once.

Not sure what you have?

Check your installation paperwork, or look near your consumer unit for a second, smaller board labelled for backup or essential circuits. If you're still not sure, ask us and we'll check your installation records.

During a power cut

  • Don't open or touch the battery or inverter.
  • Turn off anything you don't need on your backup circuits to make the stored energy last longer.
  • Report the power cut to your network operator by calling 105.

If you'd like backup added to your system, get in touch and we can talk you through the options.
